Negotiations on a free trade agreement between Canada and the United Kingdom began on March 28. In its publicly released trade objectives, Canada stated that it will seek an agreement that: “Fully defends Canada’s supply management system for dairy, poultry and eggs, including by not conceding any additional market access in these sectors.” The UK’s negotiating position highlighted dairy as an example of a key sector where lowered tariffs would be beneficial to UK exporters. Until the agreement is finalized, the Canada-U.K. Trade Continuity Agreement, established in 2021, will be in effect.
