DPAC sent its submission on the Fertilizer Emissions Reduction Target to the Government of Canada, recommending a collaborative approach between the federal, provincial and territorial governments, along with stakeholders and other parties involved in identifying and adapting innovative solutions. DPAC reiterated that this collaboration is needed to ensure the stability and sustainability of Canadian food production and that research funding is needed to fill the data gaps identified in the discussion paper to understand the issues in more detail.

Finally, given the current issues associated with the ambitious goal of reducing Canada’s fertilizer emissions by 30% by 2030, DPAC recommended that this goal be voluntary for the industry at this stage, and that next steps should be taken by the Government only after the resolution of data gaps associated with complexities and uncertainties of adopting suggested practices and technologies.
