On July 16, 2023, the United Kingdom signed a treaty to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The accession should accelerate negotiations for a bilateral deal between Canada and Britain with negotiations expected to conclude in mid-2024.

Market-access issues still need to be addressed in the bilateral talks as the U.K. wants to be able to sell more cheese in Canada’s supply-managed dairy sector. Despite this, the Canadian government remains committed to protecting its supply management system and does not intend to provide any additional access to the Canadian dairy market.
